The InSEMIII is a tool for characterising the mechanical properties of surfaces or structures, which is designed to function with sub-nanometre resolution in an in-situ vaccum environment such as an SEM or FIB. The InSEM is designed to be modular and flexible, to enable a wide range of applications. The system is designed to be assembled in an on-stage configuration for maximum mechanical stability, and with the high temperature option allows in-situ mechanical testing at temperatures up to 800ºC. Independent control of the tip and sample temperatures is integrated with multi-location thermocouple feedback.

The new Gemini system from Nanomechanics is the world’s first commercial, isometric multi-dimensional instrument for the study of hardness, tribology, wear, and adhesion at the nanoscale. The device can measure the interaction of two objects that are sliding across each other – not merely making contact. The tool allows the user to measure forces and displacements in both quasi-static and dynamic modes, with sub-nanometre and nano-Newton resolutions. A sample stage of sub-nanometre resolution complements the actuators to produce highly precise targeting.
